Day 16: Guitar Lake
Back to Day 15
Forward to Day 17
Looking across the Kern Canyon to the mountains beyond
The Bighorn Plateau was very much like a desert...
... but still there was a marmot there, chasing grasshoppers
Looking in the direction of Mount Whitney, which is obscured by the other mountains.
Sandy meadow, looking east I think?
At the Crabtree Ranger Station, we had to pick up our "wag bags". While in the general region of Mount Whitney, you are not allowed to bury your solid waste because there are too many people and the ground is too rocky. Instead, you have to use this wag bag as a way to pack it out.
Timberline Lake
At Guitar Lake, the campsite of choice for anyone wanting to summit Whitney the next day.
We setup camp very early today, around 3pm, so we had plenty of time for other things. Our campsite was already surrounded by a little fortress of rocks, but Ian carefully fortified it further, just in case the wind became a problem in the night.
Final Tally:
10.5 miles
1900 ft up, 1400 ft down
2 marmots
