2005 Origami Ornament

Little Turtle by Tomoko Fuse

Design from: Unit Origami: Multidimensional Transformations
Built with: 24 2" silver squares
Final size: about 2.5" in diameter
Assembly notes: Glue was used to put this model together, although it was not entirely necessary. The model tended to be very flexible without the glue as a result of having no locking tabs on the joints (also due to the slippery nature of the foil paper).

After manufacturing several of the ornaments in this way, I realized that it might be possible to place a cube or an octahedron inside of the outer shell and make it more interesting that way.

Cube design: Simple Sonobe
Cube design from:
Unit Origami: Multidimesional Transformations
Cube built with: 6 3" square pieces
Cube assembly notes: No glue was necessary, the model was very solid without it.

Octahedron design: Triangle Edge Module by Lewis Simon and Bennett Arnstein
Octahedron design from: 3D Geometric Origami
Octahedron build with: 12 3"x1.5" rectangles
Octahedron assembly notes: No glue was used in this model. I found it was necessary to fold back the locking tabs and not use them, as they made assembly difficult. Once all the pieces were together, the foil made it easy to slide them together further and tighten up the joints.
